چکیده

Biofilms represent an ancient, ubiquitous and influential form of life on earth. They are interesting both scientifically and because of their impacts on our environment, health and technology. Biofilm formation is initiated by attachment of bacterial cells from an aqueous suspension onto a suitable attachment substratum. While in certain, well studied cases initial attachment and subsequent biofilm formation is mediated by specific ligand-receptor pairs on the bacteria and attachment substratum, in the open environment, including the ocean, it is assumed to be non-specific and mediated by processes similar to those that drive adsorption of colloids at the water-solid interface. Colloidal principles are studied to determine the molecular and physicochemical interactions involved in the attachment of the model marine bacterium, Cobetia marina to model self-assembled monolayer surfaces. In the simplest application of colloidal principles the wettability of attachment substrata, as measured by the advancing contact angle of water (θAW) on the surface, is frequently

Influence of substratum characteristics on the attachment of a marine pseudomonad to solid surfaces.

The attachment of a marine Pseudomonas sp. to a variety of surfaces was investigated, and the number of bacteria which became attached was related to the surface charge and degree of hydrophobicity of the substratum. Large numbers of bacteria attached to hydrophobic plastics with little or no surface charge [Teflon, polyethylene, polystyrene, poly(ethylene terephthalate)]; moderate numbers atta...

The effect of Glutamine on conductivity and energetic properties in Graphene: A DFT studies

Using the Computational methods, the interaction effect  of Glutamine Amino acid on Graphene was investigated. For this purpose, the Density Functional Theory) DFT (in the ground state of 6-31G was used, and the interaction effects of Glutamine on Graphene was investigated through attachment to two different base positions. Different parameters such as energy levels, the amount of Chemical Shif...

Thermodynamic analysis of marine bacterial attachment to oligo(ethylene glycol)-terminated self-assembled monolayers.

Colloidal models are frequently used to model the thermodynamics of bacterial attachment to surfaces. The most commonly used of such models is that proposed by van Oss, Chaudhury and Good, which includes both non-polar and polar (including hydrogen bonding) interactions between the attaching bacterium, the attachment substratum and the aqueous environment. We use this model to calculate the fre...

Variations in holdfast attachment mechanics with developmental stage, substratum-type, season, and wave-exposure for the intertidal kelp species Hedophyllum sessile (C. Agardh) Setchell.

Biomechanical models that describe physical and biological interactions on wave-exposed shores typically assume that a species' attachment properties are similar between seasons and sites. We tested this assumption using Hedophyllum sessile to investigate how macroalgal biomechanical attachment properties vary with developmental stage, substratum-type, season, and wave-exposure. Hedophyllum ses...

Assessing benthic health of hard substratum macrobenthic community using soft bottom indicators and their relationship with environmental condition

This study aimed to assess ecological quality status of hard substratum macroinvertebrates communities of the Caspian Sea with three ecological indices and their relationship with environmental factors. For this purpose, benthic communities of the Caspian Sea basin were studied seasonally during 2014 in 8 sampling sites. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate, nitrite, silicate an...
